It happens all the time - you file your tax returns only to realize afterwards that you forgot to include a deduction or schedule an expense. Perhaps a new tax preparer found something this year that you have been missing in years past, or you misread a divorce order that awarded you a child dependent deduction. In many cases, it is not too late to amend your return and claim that refund or beneficial tax loss. Let our accounting staff review your old returns - both State (any State in the USA) and Federal returns for possible mistakes. How to Get Started: Simply fax your returns to our office at 770-234-5434 or mail copies only to 1854-A Independence Square, Atlanta, GA 30338. Make sure to include a note identifying the possible mistake. Remember, there is no charge for the evaluation. If you have questions, please e-mail Jonathan Ginsberg What if a Mistake is Found? If a mistake is found, you will have to decide if you want us to prepare an amended return. In some cases, it may not be in your interest to re-open the return for a previous year, although often it is. If we find a mistake that would justify an amended return, we will contact you by phone to discuss how to proceed. What is the fee for amending a return? Our fee for finding overlooked money is usually one-half (1/2) of the newly found refund. If the taxing authority rejects our amendment, there is no fee to you. In cases involving overlooked tax losses (rather than overlooked refunds) we will quote you a fee for services. Is there any risk in filing an amended return? All information submitted to the IRS or to a State taxing agency must be truthful and accurate. If you submit false information, you can be subject to fines or imprisonment. Although rare, our review may reveal that you claimed too many or improper deductions. If that is the case, you could end up owing money to the IRS. Again, this is a somewhat rare occurrence. Ultimately, it will be your decision about filing an amended return, although it has been our experience that the IRS has become much more efficient in finding mistakes. Generally, the IRS and State taxing authorities will be more receptive to you if you approach them about fixing an underpayment mistake.
